Getting probationary periods right is not just important for ticking off your legal obligations – they can also be the difference between hiring the right person who’s going to stick around for a long time or spending time and money on someone who goes right back out the door.

Probation periods benefit both your members and their new employee. It allows each of them to see if they’re a good fit and see whether the employee is likely to work out in the long term. They’re often for a fixed period – usually between three or six months and the new staff member will be exempt from some statutory rights.

But, do your members know there are plenty of employment rights that do apply from day one of the employment? It’s important for your members to make sure they’re getting all the details right and are complying with the law when it comes to this!
