Mpox update
You may have already received an email from UKHSA colleagues announcing the first detection of a single confirmed case of Clade Ib mpox in the UK but I am sharing the key points from this here, in case it didn’t reach you. The full press release was published this afternoon and can be found here: UKHSA detects first case of Clade Ib mpox – GOV.UK
The key points from this announcement we would like to draw your attention to are:
- The risk to the UK population remains low
- The case was detected in London and the individual has been transferred to the Royal Free Hospital High Consequence Infectious Diseases unit.
- They had recently travelled to countries in Africa that are seeing community cases of Clade I mpox. No further details will be disclosed about the individual.
- Close contacts are being follow up. Any contacts will be offered testing and vaccination as needed. They will be advised on further care if they have symptoms or test positive.
- We are working closely with NHS colleagues and academic partners to determine the characteristics of the pathogen and further assess the risk to human health.
- While the existing evidence suggests mpox Clade I causes more severe disease than Clade II, we will continue to monitor and learn more about the severity, transmission and control measures.
- We will initially manage Clade I as a high consequence infectious disease (HCID) whilst we are learning more about the virus.
Reminder: UKHSA: Cold weather communications toolkit 2024/25
The Cold-Health Alerting system, jointly provided by UKHSA and the Met Office, went live today (Friday 1 November).
UKHSA and the Met Office are encouraging organisations to sign up for Weather-Health Alerts, which are distributed via email and used by organisations to plan for adverse weather conditions.
To assist in spreading cold weather messages, UKHSA has also updated its cold weather communications toolkit for 2024/25.

Government
Adult Social Care Reform: The Cost of Inaction
Inquiry
Successive governments have presented reform ideas for adult social care, yet few of these have been implemented. This inquiry seeks to understand what this inaction is costing. We will investigate the cost of inaction to individuals, the NHS, local authorities and also to the wider economy and HM Treasury, focussing not only on the financial cost, but also on the personal costs and on potential benefits that are being missed. The inquiry will consider social care for both older and working age adults.

DBS FEES RISING fron 02/12/2024
Enhanced DBS increasing by £11.50 from the 02/12/2024
(The fees below are the actual fees from DBS and do not include any administration fees that your umbrella body imposes)
From Monday 2nd December 2024, fees for DBS checks will change.
The new fees will be as follows:
- Update Service – £16 (per year)
- Basic DBS check – £21.50
- Standard DBS check – £21.50
- Enhanced DBS check – £49.50
- Enhanced DBS check with Barred List(s) – £49.50
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is funded by the fees paid from DBS check customers, and therefore fee changes can be required to meet the increased operational costs of delivering DBS’ safeguarding service. Each DBS check has its own price that is designed to cover all costs of that specific check, and each check’s fee is scrutinised separately.
DBS reviews its fees on an annual basis, and based on operational and legislative requirements, fees may change. Fees have been reduced in the past, where it has been possible to do so. For example, pre-October 2019, a Standard DBS check was priced at £26, and a Basic check was £25. Both are higher than the new rate of £21.50 that will be coming into place on 2nd December.
The new fees have been analysed and approved by the DBS board, Home Office, HM Treasury, and Minister for Safeguarding, and fall well below the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rates.
These changes are necessary to maintain the highest quality, to allow DBS to effectively safeguard our society.
Quality remains at the core of what DBS does in its products, in the services DBS provides, and in the decisions that it makes, and the new fees will help maintain the high-quality service that DBS provides to safeguard our society
