Does your team feel valued?

Does your team feel valued?

No matter the investment in improving your care home, it is the commitment of your care workers that helps to communicate and deliver the best quality of care for your residents. However, if employee confidence or trust is damaged, it can be difficult to ensure these same standards are being met – and often addressed too late to avoid potential issues.

In June, a Bristol care home trust saw staff walk out on strike, protesting contract changes they said would cut wages, sick pay entitlement and working hours.

While this may seem like an extreme example, the issue of staff morale in the care sector continues to grow, with care home managers feeling helpless in tackling the fallout.

  • Time. Look for early warning signs for a drop in staff morale. Address it as soon as possible before wider issues arise.
  • Talk. Communicate with your care team, either one-on-one or through anonymous feedback, to discover the factors that may be affecting staff morale.
  • Target. Identify the root causes of common problems and consider how they can be improved in your care service holistically. It is important to focus on the larger underlying issues, as these will create a better, more sustainable staff culture going forward.

Support. If you are serious about improving staff morale, this is no time to be marking your own homework. Honest and objective support from an independent party can create a lasting positive care environment.
