Compassionate Coping For Carers Group poster

I am beginning a research project as part of my studies which will explore the feasibility of delivering an online Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) group training programme for carers of people with dementia who have recently moved to a care home. The project is being supervised by Dr Juliana Onwumere (Consultant Clinical Psychologist), Dr Alice Mills (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) and Dr Claire McGoldrick (Clinical Psychologist).

I am writing to ask your permission to advertise details of the project in your service. The project is seeking to invite family carers of people with dementia (e.g., spouses or partners, adult children, friends, or other relatives) who have moved into a care home in the last 12 months, to join a group training programme.

The group training programme will involve attending 5 online weekly sessions which will last 1.5 hours each. They will be held on Microsoft Teams. The sessions will be led by a Trainee Clinical Psychologist (Laura Chatland). At the beginning, end and 4 weeks after the group training programme, participants will be asked to complete questionnaires which ask questions about their self-compassion, emotions and wellbeing and relationships.

We are also interested in participants experiences of the group and so they will also be invited to take part in a 1-hour interview. Participants will be reimbursed a maximum of £40 for their participation.

All data collected will be kept strictly confidential. Data obtained from the interviews will also be fully anonymised. The findings will be written up as research report for submission as part of my course and for submission to an academic journal. We will also share a summary of the research findings with participants. We would also be happy to share a research summary with your organisation should you be interested in the results.

We hope to start inviting carers to the join the group in June 2024 I would welcome the opportunity to come and speak to the care home staff and carers to discuss the project, which can be arranged at times suitable for yourselves.

I look forward to hearing from you and would be happy to discuss further. My contact details are reported below. Please also find enclosed the project information sheet, consent form, and study advert.

Many thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Laura Chatland
